Derek started his musical education when he was 9 years old learning to play the piano and being taught music theory.

​

At 16 he started playing the clarinet and by the age of 19 he was playing solo clarinet in the Queens (Territorial Army) band. In 1964 this band ceased to function due to government financial cuts so he joined the Surrey Yeomanry playing solo clarinet and still plays with the band now, playing Alto saxophone.

​

In the past he has conducted the Surrey Yeomanry and the Merton Concert Band for public engagements.

Derek has a passion to pass on his musical abilities by teaching piano and clarinet playing
